David Plowman of PDQ Door Named Hampden Business Association's 2008 Business Person of the Year

HAMPDEN, ME – The Hampden Business Association (HBA) has named David Plowman of PDQ Door Company Hampden's 2008 Business Person of the Year.  This award honors a Hampden business person who has made a significant contribution to his or her community and the region. The nominees are solicited from members of the Hampden business community and then selected by a nominating committee made up of members of the HBA.

"I was pleased to learn of the recognition.  The high caliber of past recipients is impressive and I'm honored to accept the award on behalf of myself and all the members of the PDQ Door family," says David Plowman.  "Their commitment to our customers and this community has made this award possible."

Previous recipients of the award include Harold Bouchard of H.O. Bouchard, Bion Foster of Foster Properties, Frost's Garage, Jeff Rawcliffe of Hampden Auto, Hughes Brothers, and Bob Foster of R.H. Foster.

David and his wife, Debra, started PDQ Door Company in 1994 on Outer Hammond Street in Bangor, moving to Hampden four years later.  The company began by selling and installing residential and commercial garage doors, operators and accessories.  They have since expanded the PDQ Door product line to include everything from fire doors, aluminum and glass storefronts and loading dock equipment to electric gate operators, handicapped accessible door openers, roll up doors and even pet doors. PDQ Door Company now operates in five locations throughout the state of Maine including Hampden, Rockport, Bath, Waterville and Houlton.  Products include top name brands like Liftmaster, Raynor, CHI, Artisan, Tubelite and Designer Doors.

"We service and install everything we sell," says Plowman.  "No job is too big or too small."

PDQ Door Company has also donated thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours to numerous local school projects and charity events.  Some of the beneficiaries include the Hampden/Newburgh Little League, Hampden Boosters Club, Hampden Children's Day, Hampden Kiwanis, Dexter Football, Nokomis Football, Friends of the NRA, WhiteTails Unlimited, and the Maine Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure.

On top of being business owners, David and Debra Plowman are also engaged community members.  David spent six years on the Hampden Town Council, is a member of the Penobscot County Conservation Committee, Hampden Rifle and Pistol Club, and the NRA.  For nine years, two of which he was head coach, Plowman helped coach his daughter's softball team in Little League as well as ASA summer ball.  Debra serves on the Board of Directors of Associated Builders and Contractors of Maine, spent eight years in the Maine House of Representatives and is currently serving her third term in the Maine Senate. 

Their youngest daughter, Olivia, is a seventh grader at Reed's Brook Middle School and their 19 year-old daughter, Kate, is a freshman at the University of Alabama where she made Dean's List her first semester. Their son, James, works for the company and lives in Hampden with his wife Erica and son Corbin.

The Hampden Business Association held its eighth annual awards banquet on May 13th, 2009 at Spectacular Events Center in Bangor to honor Plowman.
